These historic buildings - 'kamienica' in Polish - are to be found in the historic central parts of Krakow. In the old town and surrounding vicinity, in the Jewish district of Kazimierz and in Old Podgórze, just across the Wisła River from Kazimierz. Many of these tenement buildings are still in poor, unrenovated condition, but are slowly being returned to their former glory. On the old town square of Krakow, some of the historic tenement buildings are up to 600 years old. Just outside the centre, many buildings were built during the Austro-Hungarian empire's reign over Krakow during the late 19th and early 20th century. A little further from the centre, many of the tenement buildings were constructed in the art-deco style in the 1930's, between the first and second world wars.
