Kazimierz was run-down for many years after the devastation of the Jewish population in World War 2, but is now gentrifying rapidly and is identifiable not only by its Jewish history (synagogues, museums, cemeteries) but also by its cosmopolitan café, bar and restaurant scene. It is also the bohemian hub of Krakow, home to galleries and the scene of regular cultural events.
Whilst many historic buildings in the area are still in need of renovation, there has been several successful projects completed in recent years. There are also plans for a full renovation of Plac Nowy (New Square), the heart of the area. Other plans underway include a new footbridge linking Plac Wolnica and the historic district of Podgórze on the other side of the Wisła (Vistula) River.
Next to the river, there are many pretty and quiet streets which are also part of Kazimierz, and considered some of the most desirable locations to live in central Krakow.
