The rise of BPO in Krakow
12-12-2007

By the end of 2008, approximately 200 000 people are expected to be employed in this sector in the CEE region. Krakow has emerged as the preferred location in Poland for BPO, with 18 major companies already having chosen the city for their call, shared-service or IT centres in the region.

The attractiveness of Krakow is inextricably linked to education, and the high quality of the graduates produced by Krakow's universities and colleges. Each year, the region of Malopolska (of which Krakow is the capital) has approximately 200 000 students enrolled at its 34 universities and colleges, and 33 000 students graduate annually (according to PAIZ, the Polish investment agency).

Among the highest profile companies engaged in BPO in Krakow are Shell, Motorala, Phillip Morris, IBM, Cap Gemini and International Paper. Some of these companies have had added incentive to locate in Krakow due to the presence of the Special Economic Zone which provides tax breaks and other cost savings.

At the end of the day, however, these companies are in Krakow because of the low labour costs. Whilst wage levels in Poland are rising, these companies have declared their intention to stay for the foreseeable future due to the high (and rising) quality of the workers they can attract. As well as being able to attract multilingual staff, other areas of expertise valued in Poland include finance and accounting, sales, HR and computer programming.
