New government for Poland
22-10-2007

With 73.7% of precincts reporting, PO has won just over 41% of the vote and PiS 32%. This would translate into 205 seats in the 460-seat Sejm for PO and 166 seats for PiS.
Only two other parties will head into Parliament: the Polish Farmers Party (PSL), which is the preferred coalition partner of PO, and the leftist coalition Lewica i Democraci (LiD). PSL would garner 36 seats and LiD would receive 52.
Former junior coalition partners LPR and Samoobrona faced a crushing defeat in the elections. Neither party will be in Parliament after having received 1.3% and 1.7% of the vote, respectively.
Voter turnout, the key behind the PO victory, was high at 53%.
PO leader Donald Tusk is expected to become Prime Minister.
The news of victory for Civic Platform is expected to be greeted positively on financial markets, as its leader and the prospective PM, Donald Tusk, is regarded as EU friendly and \'Western\' in his outlook, in stark contrast to the outgoing Kaczynski.
